The teaching staff at Hazlewood have produced this information to help make the transition from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2 as smooth as possible.
The Key Stage 1 children are already used to socialising with Key Stage 2 pupils at lunchtimes, assemblies and in the playground before and after school. In order to make this transition easier for the children, we try to minimise the changes to their already established routine. On Transition Day in July, your child is introduced to their new class teacher. During this time, they will spend time in their new classes and familiarise themselves with the location, facilities and support staff. The children are also shown where to line up in the mornings, their cloakroom hooks, where the lunch trolley will be and where they will be dismissed from at the end of the day.
The Key Stage 2 team are passionate about providing an exciting, purposeful learning experiences for all of our children. We recognise our responsibility to nurture and develop each child, across a broad and balanced curriculum. Our curriculum is topic based with enrichment opportunities offered throughout the year.
Reading Your child will be given a school reading book. Please read with your child at least once a week and then record comments in their reading record.
Spellings Set weekly with a test on a Friday. To assist your child please practice these daily as this does help them to retain the words.
Times Tables Regular practice at home is essential. The Government guidance on times tables states that all children should be fluent in all times table (including up to 12×12) by the end of year 4.
Literacy and Maths tasks Homework is set every week and you will receive the topic based work at the beginning of each half term.
Indoor PE and outdoor Games lessons take place each week. It is recommended that your child’s PE kit is in school every day, as timetables could change for various reasons.
A full PE kit should consist of the following clearly labelled items:
- Plimsolls and trainers;
- a red t-shirt;
- black shorts;
- plain navy or black track suit for outdoor games.
Please pack the kit into a named drawstring bag and hang on the allocated peg in the cloakroom or locker.
Year 3 children have swimming lessons at Killingworth pool for two terms. Pupils will need to pack a costume, towel and goggles (optional) for these lessons.
Teachers are in the playground when the whistle is blown at the beginning of everyday, should you need to pass on a message or arrange a meeting. Alternatively, you can email the class teacher using the school email or ring the school office. We will try to respond ASAP.
We hope this information is useful in outlining the important information about moving to Key Stage 2.
