Year 1

The Key Stage 1 team are passionate about providing an exciting, purposeful learning environment for all of our children. We recognise the responsibility to nurture and develop each little mind, as they embark upon their learning journey across Key Stage 1.

All children in Key Stage 1 are part of the Read Write Inc. program, children are taught by stage not age in small groups. Writing is developed through effective ‘Talk for Writing’ and ‘Power of Reading’ strategies. We also use concrete resources to support us in our learning of maths, this is a hands on approach which helps to deepen children’s understanding and knowledge of number. We teach foundation subjects in a cross curricular way through exciting topics, for example previous topics have included ‘To Infinity and Beyond’, ‘Traditional Tales’ and ‘What’s your superpower?’.

In Key Stage 1 we encourage learning through play and have adopted a continuous provision learning environment, where children are encouraged to become independent, confident and resilient learners. We often make use of our Forest School in a variety of ways, from science experiments to bringing stories to life around the fire pit.

In Key Stage 1 we promote a broad and balanced curriculum. We approach learning in a creative way in order to enthuse and engage our children. Our aim is to spark curiosity and promote risk taking where children can challenge themselves at every opportunity. We encourage children to question the world around them and in doing so this provides them with a deeper level of understanding about what they are learning.

PE kit

Key stage 1 children will take part in indoor or outdoor PE lessons every week. The days that PE will take place on will be confirmed at the beginning of each term by your child’s class teacher.

A full PE kit should consist of the following clearly labelled items:

• Hazlewood PE kit (navy tracksuit bottoms, red t-shirt, red tracksuit jacket, and trainers).
• Please ensure that no jewellery is worn on PE days and that hair is tied up.

A PE kit order form can be requested at the school office.
