Year 5

The Key Stage 2 team are passionate about providing an exciting, purposeful learning experiences for all of our children. We recognise our responsibility to nurture and develop each child, across a broad and balanced curriculum. Our curriculum is topic based with enrichment opportunities offered throughout the year.

Homework guidelines

Reading

Your child will be given a school reading book based on our scheme – Accelerated Reader. This scheme allows children to pick a book of their choice to read and, once finished, complete a short comprehension activity based on their chosen book on the iPad. Please read with your child at least once a week.

Spellings

Set weekly with a test on a Friday. To assist your child please practice these daily as this does help them to retain the words.

Times Tables

Regular practice at home is essential. The Government guidance on times tables states that all children should be fluent in all times table (including up to 12×12) by the end of year 4. TT Rockstars homework will be set weekly; 15 minutes to be completed every week due on a Friday.

Topic choosing homework

A homework grid will be sent home termly based on our current topic. Children can choose which activity they would like to complete and bring their homework in to share with the class.

PE Kit

PE lessons take place each week. On PE days, children should come to school in their full PE kit which consists of:

• Trainers;
• Red t-shirt;
• Blue pants/shorts.

Year 5 children have swimming lessons at Killingworth every Friday. Pupils will need to pack a costume, towel and goggles (optional) for these lessons.
