As a school, we strongly believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for pupils. Pupils develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning.
They develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore differences and similarities between foreign languages and English. Learning another language raises awareness of our multi-lingual and multi-cultural world and introduces an international dimension to pupil’s learning.
The learning of a foreign language provides a medium for cross-curricular links and for reinforcement of knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects. Children across Key Stage 2 learn French in a dedicated French lesson each week.
Children in our infant department develop basic French skills through the singing of French songs, learning basic phrases and learning from an early outset that French is fun! We hold special ‘French’ events in school, for example French Carnival week, Bastille Day. A two-yearly educational visit to Normandy (France) for our KS2 pupils will take place.
